Washington D.C.
Words can’t express what an amazing time we had at this museum in D.C. Emotions ran the gamut from high to low, but every single one hitting a direct and profound button inside each of us.
After talking about our experience at the end of the day in the museum cafeteria, each of us were left with different experiences and takes on the day. But all of us were moved to a point nearing tears.
Of course, it is impossible to wrap up the sum of the African American/Black experience in one building in one outing, however we must say that the totality of everything inside this beautifully built museum comes closer than we could have ever imagined.
We were able to take a walk on the lighter side by visiting sections of Music, Art and Sports and learn of artists, writers and educators before our time.
We were also amazed and thrilled to learn of the many contributions that Black people have made as a whole to society at large. Innovators, orators, doctors, scientists, writers, architects, entrepreneurs and so much more. Inside the walls of the museum lies a plethora of information pertaining to the countless contributions of Black Americans that so many of us were not aware of.
Along with the highs of historic contributions, is the documented dark period of slavery and the existence and historic noting of the systemic racism that unfortunately still plagues us all today.
Although this part of the museum is truly somber, it is a must see. It is a heartfelt portion of life and our history of humanity that we must all face and reconcile. It opens such a space for communication, dialogue and unification, however we must all understand first, the reality of the situation.
We would recommend breaking up the museum in 3 parts like we did, starting with the upper floor first (artists, entertainers, innovators, athletes) and such, then tackle the bottom level, (Slavery, Emmit Til Exhibit and more). Finish with the main level (civil rights movement, modern advancements). We learned of the intentional layout of how the exhibits were displayed in the museum and after spending a significant amount of time in there, we completely agree with the logic.
At the end of a very long, emotional yet, also wonderfully exhilarating and exciting day the end theme while leaving was one of awe and hope. Which in many ways describes the undertone and pulse of Black America.
We are truly grateful for the experience
