Fried Green Tomatoes

Inspired by our trip to Charleston, S.C.

As we posted earlier in the week Charleston S.C was a terrific city to visit with a ton of activities to do for all and delicious restaurants for everyone!

Here is a fantastic little appetizer or side dish that they are known for their FRIED GREEN TOMATOES!

Just like the movie years back, this is a cute lil number that should be revisited!

Check out this recipe and add it to your meal planning for the week!

Ingredients

  • 3 medium-sized, firm green tomatoes
  • Salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 cup milk, almond milk or  buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/3 cup fine white cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup peanut, canola, or olive oil for frying

All you have to do is:

Simply clean and slice green tomatoes.

In small bowls add the flour and Cajun seasoning (if using), 2) milk , almond milk or buttermilk and egg, and 3) breadcrumbs and cornmeal.

Whisk together the egg and milk.

Bread the tomato slices:

Heat the oil in a skillet on medium heat. Dip the green tomato slices in the flour-seasoning and pepper flakes, then the buttermilk-egg mixture, then the cornmeal-breadcrumb.

To top off this delicious bite add either a regional remoulade, or my go to Hot Sauce, (Yes I keep mine in my bag too)

*All remoulades are based on either oil or mayonnaise, and most have mustard, garlic, paprika, and Cajun or Creole seasonings.
