Sushi Prepared by The Loft Kitchen
Here is an absolute family favorite that I have to admit we don’t cook hardly enough…..Sushi.
Not only does everyone love eating it, it’s also a lot of fun making it together with the whole family. The kids love to help out picking what goes into each roll, and then its great watching them try to roll each one when it’s overstuffed!!
We know there are some of you out there that can’t bring themselves to even try sushi. For whatever reason you might feel it’s not going to be very tasty. We’re here to tell you, we have been there. There was a time when we were aboard a cruise ship trying to convince ourselves to try it….we couldn’t. Well, flash forward a few years later, we are living in Hawaii and we finally summon the taste bud courage to try, and it’s like the heavens opened up & to slapped us in the face!!!
We’ve found the secret to a good sushi roll is making sure you have the right rice, then preparing it the right way. We like a rice cooker to make sure it gets done correctly. Plus, once cooked, make sure you add a little rice vinegar and a little white sugar to make your rice – sushi rice!! (Bonus Tip: Toast some Sesame Seeds & roll your completed roll in them for an extra dose of flavor).
There are plenty of options of what you can put in your rolls. A few favorites of ours, are spicy tuna (ahi tuna mixed in sriracha and mayo), carrots, avocado, salmon, & cream cheese. However, the boys like to put Spam in theirs….yes, really. Everyone has a favorite go to roll they like to make, so you can add your own flavors for your own taste buds and sensibilities – it’s a win-win for everyone!!
It’s a meal that it takes a little bit of time to prepare, but if you do it together as a family you get an interesting and fun activity, plus you get an assortment of all the different types of rolls to try together.
